This region is vaste and diverse. It has plateaus and schist mountains with its typical villages of white houses and “montes”, small clusters of people.
The landscape is dominated by Esteva or Rockrose (Cistus Ladanifer) which has its ex libris in Spring, when its white flowers blossom amongst the almond, olive, carrob, fig trees and holm oaks.
Here you can spot huge and beautiful flocks with goats and sheeps of the autochthonous breed, which share the space with local inhabitants.
You can also find delicious honey and game meat. Tucked away from the more touristic part of the Algarve, Giões is a great alternative for who appreciates the quiet life, immersed in nature.
We are close to the border of the Algarve with Alentejo, where there is a very low population density.
You can find us in a beautiful hill, between the mountains close to Vascão stream, with a history that goes back to the XVI century.
There are many things you can do in Alcoutim, from river cruising to canoeing or taking the zip-line between Portugal and Spain, the biggest in the Iberian Peninsula and the only one in the world that is cross-border.
Don’t miss out Mertola, known by its arqueological richness that links back to the Neolitc Period. In the Summer, you can enjoy the beautiful river beaches Pego do Fundo or Tapada Grande, a lovely alternative to the more mainstream coasts beaches of the Algarve.
When we visit Alcoutim we are surprised by the tranqulity of the river Guadiana, our natural border with Spain. At the opposite shore, we can see the Spanish village Sanlúcar de Guadiana, which is just a small boat trip away.
Alcoutim invites relaxed strolls through its schist streets, where you can find many historical marks such as the Castle, Nossa Senhora da Conceição Hermitage and Santo António Chaple.
